Preventive Conservation in Museums

Preventive conservation in museums is the set of measures taken to prolong the life of cultural objects and works of art by preventing, to the extent possible, their natural or accidental deterioration. It seeks to preserve artifacts through basic conservation measures.

The 19 videos present concise, clear and practical techniques and advice on preventive conservation for everyone who works with collections (curators, architects, designers, technicians, archivists, volunteers, etc.). The information and numerous demonstrations help to illustrate the practice of preventive conservation. A manual with a bibliography accompanies the videos.

As their titles show, the first twelve videos (1 to 12) present in a general way the different factors causing the deterioration of collection objects as well as the measures to be taken to protect them efficiently. The following seven videos (13 to 19) deal more specifically with the conservation methods pertaining to different works of art and the materials that make up museum collections.

An excellent initiation tool, this audiovisual material suits individual or group training of personnel of the concerned institutions. It can also be a guide for anyone wishing to finetune their training.

Traces
(English subtitles)

A mythological figure, who knows both the past and the future, wanders in her shelter and speaks of life and death, love and hate, and of humanity that is doomed to repeat the tragic course of its own destruction, unable to learn from its past.

In his scenario, the director has linked dramatic images of contemporary sculptures with some 8th century poems to create a work that is relevant to the present.

In his sculpture of the past thirty years, Marcel Braitstein has been preoccupied by the human condition, and by the traces left by many civilizations. Although separated by a thousand years of history, an anonymous 8th century Anglo-Saxon poet, meditating on the ruins of the Roman Empire, was already concerned by these same themes. Based on sculptures by Marcel Braitstein. Texts : Anonymous 8th Anglo-Saxons poems and Marcel Braitstein.

Philosophizing on mathematics

This video illustrates an application of the "Philosophy for Children" approach as adapted to mathematics. We follow two groups of pupils "philosophizing about mathematics" : a 5th-grade class from a school in the Laval district, and a group of pupils in the 5th and 6th grades from an alternative school in Longueuil, the later group being in contact via internet with other groups. Begun in the 1970's in the USA by the philosophers Matthew Lipman and Ann Margaret Sharp, the "Philosophy for Children" approach was adapted to mathematics by a team of researchers from CIRADE, consisting of a specialist in Philosophy of Education (Marie-France Daniel of Université de Montréal), specialists in the teaching of Mathematics (Louise Lafortune of UQTR and Richard Pallascio of UQAM), and a resource person in Philosophy (Pierre Sykes).The video allows us to follow the pupils during the various stages of this philosophical approach : reading, questioning, selection of a philosophical question, reflections before and following the community of inquiry, mathematical/philosophical activities, review of the abilities used to think, as well as their exchanges via internet.

Target clientele : This document is designed to be used by teachers in primary (3rd cycle) and secondary (4th cycle) schools, as well as by students in teacher training programs.

Pianos in my Classroom
(English subtitles)

This video shows what has been achieved through group piano teaching in the public school sector. The results can be seen from various perspectives, including :

a) the level of difficulty attained after one, two, three and four years of teaching;

b) the level of technical and musical training; students taught in an electronic piano studio have no problems playing acoustic pianos;

c) the level of personal interpretation; group teaching, properly done, in no way inhibits personal expression.

Oasis at the Bottom of the Sea

On volcanic ridges, deep in the Pacific Ocean, hi-tech scientific submersibles explore hot springs known as "hydrothermal vents", where dense colonies of unique and often bizarre organisms form an ecosystem based on food produced by bacteria. Hydrogen sulfide and other chemicals in vent waters are used by microbes to produce energy needed to synthesize organic matter from mineral compounds. Study of organism adaptations to this extreme environment is providing new insight into the limits to life on Earth, and elsewhere.
